Open Seminar “Social Innovations for Peace” at University for Peace

IPPNWCR is hosting a seminar with the special guest speakers, Dr. Vappu Taipale, the former co-president of IPPNW and the former Minister of Health and Social Services and Dr. Ilkka Taipale, the former Parliamentarian, doctor and an author,  from Finland at University for Peace on Wednesday, February 13th, 2013.

Coming all the way from Finland, these two amazing doctors will share with us their first-hand experience on promoting “The Nordic Model of Social Policy” and illustrate how poor and small countries have transformed into informative and economically successful nations by accelerating democracy, free education and gender equality.

Dr. Ilkka Taipale will introduce “One Hundred Social Innovations”, which he is the editor of. The book includes short stories from a hundred authors ranging from presidents and prime ministers to NGO workers sharing their stories about social solutions to build peace and stability.

Dr. Vappu Taipale will share her experience on social change and also her stunning work for total nuclear disarmament as the Co-President of International Physicians for Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW) in Finland.

Holding a specialty in social medicine, Dr. Taipale has been a Member of Parliament (1971 – 75, 2000 – 2007), a Member of the Helsinki City Council (1969 – 80, 1993 to present), and the Chief Doctor in the Social Hospital for Alcoholics and Kellokoski Mental Hospital. He has devoted his life to support the poor, the unemployed, the homeless, prisoners, alcoholics and schizophrenics. He is an author of several publications regarding peace, war, social medicine and psychiatry. His latest book “100 Social Innovations” has been translated in 14 languages, and will be translated in 4 more in the near future.

Dr. Vappu Taipale, Professor, Medical Doctor

Holding a specialty in child and adolescent psychiatry, Dr. Taipale has served as Finland’s Minister of Health and Minister of Social Affairs. She has also worked as the Director General of National Board of Social Welfare, and of National Research and Development Centre for Welfare and Health in Finland. She has held chairmanships of academic and technological research bodies nationally and within the European Union. She was a member and chair of the United Nations University Council and is Honorary President of the International Society for Gerontechnology. After her retirement she has been actively involved in issues of mental health, aging and world peace. She was co-president of the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW, 2008-2012), and is a senior advisor for the WHO Collaborating Centre for Mental Health Promotion, Prevention and Policies and chair, Union for Senior Services in Finland.

Miembros del IPPNW CR presentes en la entrega de 1000 grullas de papel a la Presidente de Costa Rica, Laura Chinchilla. Casa Presidencial. A este evento fueron embajadores de varios países, incluyendo Francia y Rusia. También asistieron tres diputados miembros del PNND y tuvimos la suerte de también tener a quienes en ese momento representaban a América Latina: Vappu e Ilka Taipale, dos pioneros en el desarme y excelentes personas. Ellos también dieron una charla en el Hospital San Juan de Dios, en el Hospital Nacional Psiquiátrico, a estudiantes de Medicina de la Universidad de Costa Rica y en la Universidad para la Paz.1

Costa Rica Supports Ban on Nuclear Weapons

IPPNWCR has organized and conducted a nuclear free event together with International Canpaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN), PNND (Parliamentarians for Non-Proliferations and Disarmament of Nuclear Weapons), Mayors for Peace, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Costa Rica, and the Presidential Office of Costa Rica.

The event was called Paper Crane Project started by ICAN, and IPPNWCR has made a major contribution to realise it in Costa Rica since its Associate Media Coordinator was the ICAN project coordinator in Costa Rica and MA schollar of the University for Peace. IPPNWCR has bridged ICAN to the government and made significant contribution to carry out the project.

The event is to deliver a thousand paper cranes hand foleded by high school students in Hiroshima to the head of the state, and to receive a message to support nuclear weapon ban. It was held at the auditorium in the Presidential Office of Costa Rica, from 11am, Monday February 11th, 2013.

“As a global citizen, every one of us has responsibility to make the world better place for the future generation to come.”, said Ms. Ishii. “An issue so important, so dangerous and so urgent as the existence of nuclear weapons, must be addressed comprehensively and holistically.”

The Acing Rector of University for Peace, Mr. Valle reffered to the Ghandi’s famous quote “There is no way to peace, peace is the way”, and said “We shall take lead on the way of peace, and this ceremony shows a good example”. He also mentioned the importance of education on nuclear disarmament and peace promotion.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Castillo said that Costa Rica calls for a renewal of effort and committment to achieve nuclear non proliferation and disarmament. “We can not leave the task of nuclear disarmament in the hands of developed countries. It is we who insist to comply with UN Charter Article 26.”

President of Costa Rica, Ms. Laura Chinchilla said, “Peace cannot be only the subject of prayers for some people, it is the most natural human asset we have. These beautiful cranes made by hands full of the hope of many young people will be able to spread their wings to more countries every day.”
